Why not join a camera club - Angela

Are you just starting out on your photography journey ? Have you had your camera for a while and want to take your skills to the next level ? Then you should consider joining your local Camera Club.

I joined our local Camera Club a few years ago and when I look back at the images I took back then, and what I do now there is such a huge difference. Being around like-minded people, seeing their images, getting to talk to talented, creative people who are only too pleased to share their experiences with you is priceless. Okay, it was a bit daunting to begin with,  actually it still is daunting, but not as bad as when I first joined the club. Having your work presented and judged by someone that you don't know and who doesn't know you is nerve racking. After all, this is your image, that you have an emotional attachment to, and the judge is looking it at with a totally different perspective.

One of the biggest things I have learnt is not to take the judging too personally, that at the end of the day this is one person's opinion of your work.  And it is your work, your style, what you have seen and wanted to capture before you pushed that shutter button .

Most Camera Clubs have monthly meetings where you take your printed image along, or submit a digital image. Quite often they will give you a set subject, this is a great opportunity to try out new things and really gets your creative juices thinking. I would encourage you to find your local club and go along to see how they work  and then join up. You will not regret it.

This month, April, our set subject was Queen Street, which is the main street here in our town. The idea was to capture anything whether it be architecture, macro, or a street scene. I must admit I did struggle with this one and ended up not showing anything in the set subject, instead I submitted three images into the Open division. Our judge was Terry Cockfield, a really nice guy, with a wealth of  photography knowledge .  The standard of images at our club is very high, and his comments were well received by everyone.

Here are the images I submitted and the results -

Selfie - Pasifika 2014  Received Honours

Addison - 9 Days New   Received Highly Commended.

Mantis - Received Highly Commended
